The Extraordinary Siberian Chaga

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Siberian chaga mushroom appears as a black mass on birch trees, dead or alive. Occasionally, it may also be seen growing on hornbeam, ash, elm or beech.

In Europe and Asia, chaga has been used for centuries to treat cancers of the heart and liver, digestive ailments, and tuberculosis. [121]

The black “skin” was removed and the lighter inside boiled as tea. Being such a compact natural medicine made it a valuable, portable remedy for healers of old.

Today’s scientific focus on chaga extract is primarily as an anti-tumor remedy. In fact, it was approved in Russia as a cancer drug already in 1955, successfully used to treat cancers of the stomach, lungs, breasts and cervix. [122]

A 1998 study on chaga extract showed that it did inhibit growth of cervical cancer in a lab. [123] And a 1995 study reported both growth inhibition and death of melanoma cells, also in a lab (in vitro). [124, 25]

Additional research has shown cancer cell division to be decreased by some of the active compounds of the chaga mushroom. [125, 126]

The black color of chaga is caused by betulin, a medicinally active compound that makes up 30% of the skin. [127] The lighter inside of the mushroom is rich in fungal lanostanes. So chaga tea may be more effective if made with the whole mushroom, including the skin.

Even better are chaga extracts that are made with not only the whole mushroom but also the mycelium, because the mycelium contains higher levels of medicinal proteins than the fruit body of the mushroom.

Other research has found chaga to possess powerful anti-viral properties. In 1996, two studies published results of inhibitory effects on both influenza virus [127] and HIV. [128] Considering the nature of viruses, the most likely scenario is that chaga works on viruses by enhancing the body’s own immune system, a theory confirmed by a paper published in 2002 and another in 2005. [25, 129] The same mechanism may explain the reported anti-inflammatory effect of chaga. [130]

Alcohol extract of Siberian chaga has been shown to help balance blood sugar. [131] It is also a powerful antioxidant. [132, 133]

As an amusing aside not related to human health, Siberian chaga may even be used as a tree medicine. Paul Stamets relates a story of a Quebec arborist using a chaga poultice to heal chestnut blight. Not only does it cure the tree, but the tree even becomes resistant to further infections of blight after having been treated. [134]

Self Tanning Spray

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

The tanned appearance is both popular and all the rage more now than at any time for decades; people like the brownish glow of their skin as it makes them feel fashionable and self-confident. However, at the same time, sun bathing is less and less advisable because of the increase in the quantity of skin cancer injuries. Therefore, alternatives to it have and still are being developed. Synthetic tanning using tanning beds or sunless tanning by synthetic means such as body lotions, creams, gels or self tanning spray are broadly obtainable.

Although the most advanced process of achieving a tan is the use of a tanning bed or tanning booth, not everybody can afford to purchase their own machine or go to a salon four times a month in order to get their tan topped up, so the do-it-yourself methods have become more and more popular.

A self tanning spray is a beauty product frequently containing DHA that can be applied at home as a sunless tanning solution. DHA is a chemical that causes a reaction with the skin’s amino acids, which in turn causes the turning of the top layer of skin a brown colour. The effect of a self tanning spray lasts for approximately six or eight days, if you are wise not to take too long in the shower, if you shun using too a harsh soap and if you do not rub yourself too hard with the towel.

Self tanning is not without a number of challenges and so, while it is less expensive than treatment in a commercial tanning salon, it is also more tricky to get a satisfactory outcome. It is more complicated to get an even tan when using a self tanning spray. The coloring solution needs to be atomized in a fine film with immense care not to overlap too much. Overlapping leads to darker tan shades on some body areas.

Therefore, another disadvantage of the self tanning spray is that you may require another person’s assistance for the process. The back for instance is very hard to spray unless there is someone to assist you. The same difficulty presents itself for the back of the legs, the nape of the neck and the bottom. If you ask a friend to assist you with the tanning, it will make the procedure a lot simpler.

You must be particularly careful to protect your eyes, your lips, ears and other sensitive body parts. It is also possible to stain your nails and palms when using a self tanning spray. You could eradicate this problem by using gloves or wet wipes whenever necessary so as not to permit the tanning agent to dry on the palms or your hands or your nails.

Then, last but not least, do not spray too much liquid on your body, because the result may be an unusual orange glow or a rather uneven tan. Although many people frequently use these cans of self tanning spray in its various forms, there is no question about it that they are a lower quality solution when compared to the top-quality, but more expensive tanning bed or tanning booth.

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Sun bed lamps, like you find in up-market tanning beds, are a large part of the secret to that perfect suntan. You can get any type of tan you require with the wide range of bulbs available on the market for sun beds. There are several types of lamps, such as deep-tanning lamps, bronzing bulbs, face lamps and plenty of others too. These high-tech lamps employ the best technology to produce a tan evenly, and above all, safely.

Furthermore, there are different bulbs for every type of skin too. The tanning bed industry produces different bulbs for dark to light skin colours. Besides that, you can choose to have a light tan, a golden tan, a bronze tan, or the deepest, darkest tan anyone has ever seen. You can also change the type of lamp, as your tan progresses, so that you can achieve all kinds of quite amazing results.

A tanning lamp is like having your own sun in a tube. In fact, it is even better, because you can control it! Modern tanning bed lamps are manufactured to the highest standards and are also very safe. The sunbed industry and the government have implemented strict rules to guarantee your safety. So, if you carefully follow the instructions supplied with the product, you can feel sure that you will not be putting your health at risk to look like a film star.

The UV rays they emit are well within prescribed safety limits to ensure you stay healthy and tanned. Furthermore, there are plenty of choices open to you, ranging from UVB and UVA combinations to straight UVA. It is your choice! So, why not get a little extra tan?

Tanning lamps are ultraviolet-emitting devices that act as the primary component of the various kinds of tanning beds and booths on the market. Tanning bed bulbs have as their main purpose the enhancement of a cosmetic tan, although these lamps also have a reputation for the successful treatment of eczema and psoriasis. The depth and type of tanning produced depends on the spectrum of light produced by the tanning lamps and the vast majority of them produce more ultraviolet light than the sun.

Nearly all tanning bulbs use a unit called a ‘ballast’ to regulate their power consumption. The ballast stabilizes the flow of electrical energy inside the lamp and is required to ensure that the bulbs use only the necessary amount of wattage that they need in order to work effectively.

There are various types of tanning bulbs on sale and include reflector tanning bulbs and high output bulbs. Most bulbs fall into two main groups: high pressure and low pressure types. (Within the tanning industry, it is customary to refer to high pressure tanning lamps as bulbs and low pressure tanning bulbs as lamps). Both high and low pressure tanning bulbs require a lack of oxygen inside the tube.

High pressure tanning bulbs vary in length from three to five inches and operate with 250 to 2,000 watt ballasts, 400 watt high pressure tanning bulbs are the most common. They are often included in the face tanning component of a tanning bed. High pressure tanning bulbs are usually made of quartz glass and an additional specialized coating, which is essential to filter out the very harmful UVC ultraviolet rays.

HP tanning bulbs contain a small amount of mercury or argon and create ultraviolet light in high amounts. The handling of high pressure tanning bulbs should be performed very carefully and never with naked hands, because even a tiny amount of oil from your hands will cause the bulb to fail prematurely or even crack and the resultant spillage of mercury is potentially very serious. High pressure tanning bulbs ought to be replaced after roughly 1,000 hours although they will continue to produce light for up to 10,00 hours

Low pressure tanning lamps are much like normal fluorescent lights, but the glass tube of low pressure tanning bulbs automatically filters out UVC ultraviolet rays. Low pressure bulbs have a useful lifespan of between 600 and 1,600 hours with 1,000 hours being the norm again.

Birch Polypore Used as Parasite Remedy by Stone Age Man

Friday, September 11th, 2009

As suggested by its name, Birch Polypore grows on birch trees, living or dead. It grows around the world wherever birch trees are found.

Birch Polypore’s 15 minutes of fame came when it was discovered among the remains of Oetzi the Iceman, whose 5,300 year old mummified body was found 1991 at the border of Austria and Italy in a glacial ice cave.

It is believed that Oetzi used Birch Polypore as a remedy against intestinal parasites, in particular Trichuris trichuria. [190]

And indeed, Birch Polypore tea has been used historically as a folk remedy against intestinal parasites. It has also been used as a styptic to stop bleeding, and as a general antibiotic. [25]

Studies from 1997 also reported that compounds isolated from Birch Polypore helped reduce chronic skin inflammation [191] as well as inflammation in general. [192]

It was found effective against Bacillus megateterium, [194] and a study in 2000 found it to contain an antibiotic compound named Piptamine. [193] Paul Stamets suggests that it be studied for effectiveness against Bacillus anthracis, more commonly known as anthrax. [134]

Another potent compound isolated from Birch Polypore is Betulinic Acid, which is produced by birch trees and then extracted and concentrated by the Birch Polypores. A study on melanoma in 1995 found that Betulinic Acid exhibited toxicity against melanoma cells while having no adverse effect on healthy cells. [195] A later study, in 2002, may have discovered the mechanism behind Betulinic Acid’s cancer toxicity when it found that it inhibits certain enzymes involved in the growth and development of tumors. [196]

In 2001, Betulinic Acid derivatives of Birch Polypore extract demonstrated unique antiviral effects against HIV by blocking HIV reproduction. [197]

A U.S. patent on a Birch Polypore extract was filed in 2004 by world leading medicinal mushroom expert Paul Stamets, after research at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease (USAMRIID) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) concluded that his proprietary Birch Polypore extract was effective against vaccinia virus and cowpox, and non-toxic to human tissues. [134]

Tanning Bulbs

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

There are a number of sun bed lamps in each tan bed on the market. When you are getting a new, or especially a used or older tanning bed, make a careful examination of the bulbs. Ensure that they are proper tanning bulbs and comply with the FDA guidelines with regard to health and safety. You should also estimate how easy it is to get at the bulbs. Make sure that the bulbs are easy to change when necessary. It is quite important, and a lot cheaper, if you can perform such simple maintenance yourself, if you buy a home sun bed.

There are different kinds of lamps used in conventional and high pressure beds. Make sure you buy the right sun bed lamps for your bed, because they are not interchangeable. If you are buying replacement bulbs on the Internet, check the make and model of your existing bulbs carefully. Ensure that the lamps you are buying are suitable for your bed.

High Pressure Sunbed Bulbs: high pressure beds use quartz lamps in a variety of sizes. The gases used in these bulbs are pressurized to slightly higher than atmospheric pressure. The lamps in these beds are located in the top of the bed, so that you tan from above only. When you have tanned the skin on one side of your body for about 10-12 minutes, you turn over and tan the other side. The flat bed of these devices is a lot more comfortable than a conventional tanning bed.

The biggest benefit of these bulbs is the amount of time you have to spend on the sun bed. Because you tan more quickly, you need to spend less time in the salon, which means it works out cheaper. You can get the depth of tan you require in about three weeks of three to five sessions each week. However, with a conventional bed, it would take you at least a month to acquire the same level of colour. Maintaining your tan is a lot easier too. You only need two or three sessions each month to maintain the colour, compared with four times that many sessions on a conventional bed. Many of these bulbs use UVA rays only, not UVB rays which cause burning.

Conventional Tanning Bed Bulbs: Conventional, or low pressure sunbeds use long tube lamps that look like household fluorescent tubes. The lamps are located above and below the tanning bed, which means that all the body areas are browned at the same time, without having to roll over during the tanning session.

Conventional beds use UVA and UVB rays in varying mixes. Some use both and others use mostly UVA with a bit of UVB rays. UVA rays are the cause of the (premature) ageing effects on the skin and UVB rays are the burning rays that produce sunburn when you are outside in the sun. It is very important to determine which type of rays your tan bed emits. You must be sure to replace your existing bulbs with comparable new lamps after about 1,000 hours of use.

Another consideration when selecting the type of bed you use at home or in the salon, is the tanning bed lotion you will use. Different lotions suit different types of beds. The staff at your tanning salon can help you choose a lotion that will work for the bed you are using and your skin type. No matter what bed you use, you should certainly always use a lotion or a cream, because they will moisturise your skin and help you tan faster.
